Birder-quotes-b-1024x542

The Birder” premières tomorrow Thursday July 31st at Ottawa’s Mayfair Theatre on Bank St.  The comedy, currently boasting a 7.9/10 IMDB rating, sees mild-mannered bird watcher Ron (Tom Cavanagh – Ottawa born and yours truly’s brother) seek revenge after losing out as Head of Ornithology at a National Park to a younger couple.

As well as Cavanagh, The Birder heralds the return of wonderful Ontario-born actor Graham Greene, perennial comedy master Fred Willard in the role of Park President with Toronto natives Tommie-Amber Pirie and Mark Rendall who is rumoured to deliver a tremendous performance.

An Official Selection at Raindance Film Festival 2013, the Calgary International Film Festival, the Canadian Film Fest and the Los Angeles Comedy Festival The Birder promises smart wit and charm.

The Mayfair is a great choice given Tom lived as a child for  several years around the corner in Old Ottawa South on Willard St.

Tomorrow’s première will be attended by the film’s Director Theodore Bezaire, Producer Gerry Lattman and more so fly on out for a great flick with a touch of home!

The Financier (Tucaret) – Memorable “Theatre Under the Stars”

Second summer in Sandy Hill and first outing to Odyssey’s “Theatre Under the Stars” in Strathcona Park. This summer’s production The Financier is an English translation of Alain-Rene Lesage’s Tucaret – an amusing comedic romp about deception, greed and posturing of the Baroque French upper class.  It’s a who-done-it of pretence as the story unfolds to reveal who really holds the upper-hand in this convoluted caper of deceit.

Tucaret

Tucaret (Andy Massingham), the eponymous financier, is a treacherous loan-shark financing the house-hold of his mistress, the Baroness (Chandel Gambles). The Baroness plays him while in turn funding her own deceitful lover the Knight (Attila Clemann). No sooner has Tucaret gifted the Baroness that she is scammed by the Knight and his wily valet Frontin (Jesse Buck).  An attempt by handmaiden Lisette (Alanna Bale) to protect her mistress’ assets soon sees her supplanted by Marine (again Bale) Frontin’s handpicked accomplice. Throw in to the mix a drunken Marquis (Mark Huisman), a wife (Nichola Lawrence) confined to the Provinces and a social occasion that puts to shame any awkward family dinner you may have experienced and the scene is set for the veritable collapse of this house of cards. The climax is an uproarious frenzy of feverish de-masking.

Odyssey creates unique theatre with masked actors, an outdoor set and the use of props to mimic the fractious fragile treachery on stage.  The masks and choreography are beautifully done; the former fitted individually to each performer while the latter lends an air of ‘marionette’ styling which lends itself well to the “pretences” at hand. Yet these aspects separate the audience from the actors and make it difficult to connect with the characters.  Although the cast performed well – one remains slightly detached without any sense of stand-out performances due to the obscured facials expressions. While the choreography is masterful the execution was distinctly more successful by some – the delightful Alana Bale in particular – than others.

The Financier is an enjoyable period comedy but it was the overall experience that lingers.  The ensemble of the proficient, distinctive cast performance, the costumes, the masks, the set and the open-air setting all come together to create a memorable evening; one to surely add to the summer calendar.

Note: Odyssey Theatre has teamed up with Le Cordon Bleu’s Signatures Restaurant to offer a “picnic & play” option which is highly recommended.

Eye Spy: Rideau St features in Spacing.ca

This week our very own Rideau features in Spacing.ca

Rideau Street and really all of Ward12 has a fascinating, long-reaching and rich history.

From the worker’s that built the city and canal, the historic Jewish community alongside many other immigrant influxes, to the diplomats and posh historical families including many Canadian leaders that have all called Rideau-Vanier their home.

Locals work tirelessly to have the neighbourhood’s heritage recognised; often an uphill battle as grand homes and historic businesses are demolished. Hopefully the recent coverage by Spacing Magazine will help to preserve further some of our phenomenal history.  Read and enjoy the article here!

Eye Spy: Local Micro Brewery joins Wonderful Waller St Businesses

Waller St is going from strength to strength.

First in, the Lunenburg Pub: a top retreat for craft beer, trivia, music, world-cup games, improv and more. There is always something going on in this pub tucked in the beautiful stone buildings at 14 Waller St.

Follow-suite The Loft which opened a few months ago in the upstairs space of 14 Waller. An airy and bright game board lounge with over 700 games to chose from as you sup a pint and enjoy tasty bites including the newly added locally-sourced Gluten-Free range of goodness.

Now add to the mix the neighbourhood’s own local micro-brewery set in the basement of this heritage building. The Waller St-Brewing company is set to open later this summer and we can’t wait to support this latest local venture. This brewing company gives it’s heritage home a significant nod with fine prohibition style branding and website.  Read more on this newcomer in the today’s Ottawa Metro.

So great to see entrepreneurs embracing and innovating while respecting the neighbourhood’s rich history.  Tucked alongside Nicholas St and Daly Ave favourites ArtsCourt, the Ottawa Art Gallery, SAW Gallery and the fabulous Albion Rooms there is no shortage of great nights out in Sandy Hill.

Eye Spy: Phoebe Rose gets the “Go”!

Never let it be said there is no reason or point to protests and speaking out. Over the last few weeks readers met our Overbrook neighbour 3 year old Phoebe Rose and learned of her many challenges.

Hearing of OHIP’s refusal to cover her latest treatment following a relapse – a treatment that will be available at Toronto’s Sick Kids in just over a month – her family, individuals, and neighbours spoke out and challenged this decision. Twitter followed and so did Ottawa Metro, CTV Morning and more.

This raising of voices has caused a re-examination of Phoebe’s case and today her Mother Jenny Doull shared the tremendous news that OHIP will cover her treatment in New York whilst Toronto sets up its own centre.

“Strength in numbers, strength in speaking out. @JennyDoull1 confirmed #OHIP will cover #PhoebeRose cancer treatment. Thank You all. “

Eye Spy: Blooming Businesses in Ward 12 – Support Local!

Amongst the Canada Day wandering we spied the new John Fluevog store’s Grand Opening in the Byward Market.

JohnFleuvogThe celebrated Canadian shoe-designer has opened his flagship Ottawa shop in the heart of the Market at 61 William St. at George. Nice to see another cobbler take over the premises that formerly hosted Lou’s Boots – good continuity and another great shop open for business in the hood!

Straddling the border of Sandy Hill and Lowertown “Saffron Restaurant” at 426 Rideau St at Chapel has just been granted permission for a patio. This is thrilling news as the street fairly screams for more strolling leisurely foot traffic.

HeartlocalSaffron deserve local support – this restaurant gets great reviews on both Yelp and Google+ and the entrepreneurial owners have, alongside great food; invested in free Wifi, offer an breathtakingly inexpensive breakfast and never stop improving the interior.  Lets give back the love and with the advent of the patio, let’s hope this is a trend that many more local businesses will follow.

Eye Spy: Planet Coffee Turns 20

Hard to believe a hip, trendy venue is celebrating its second decade but with visionary entrepreneurs France Desfosses & Sheila McLaine at the helm it’s easy to acknowledge the staying-power of the perennial popular coffee shop in the courtyard of the Byward Market.

Last night the shop and courtyard were alive with celebration. DJ’s spun and revellers danced on cobblestones beneath lanterns. The dress-up photo-booth had a line-up from launch to closure. Food, champers and beer flowed throughout while the good, bad and beautiful came together for a night of convivial, heartfelt partying.

Ottawa’s top business women Desfosses and McLaine set a high-standard for independent coffee shops with healthy food, happening music, top java and nurturing unique and vibrant staff. Here’s to another 20 and beyond ladies!

Eye-Spy: Do You Know Phoebe Rose?

Phoebe Rose Hoffman-Doull is a 3.5 year old beautiful blond bundle of energy living just over the river from Sandy Hill in Overbrook.  She has an almost 6 year old sister called Mae, strong loving parents Jenny & Jonathan, cousins down the street and Grandparents Liza & Robin in Vanier. Phoebe Rose also has a rare form of childhood leukaemia having first been diagnosed at only 9 weeks old.

For her entire life Phoebe Rose and her family have been forced to battle for her survival. The struggles this family faced are unimaginable and yet they have relentlessly advocated for their daughter’s good health with grace and dignity.

Phoebe Rose relapsed this month; she and her family who have worked tirelessly to help other kids with cancer are facing their monster again for the 3rd time.

The family is sitting on a knife-edge as we write this waiting to hear whether OHIP will approve her latest treatment deemed “experimental” in Ontario.  The family have now been waiting 15 days.

As Phoebe’s mother Jenny wrote “In the twelve days that we have waited, the disease in Phoebe’s bone marrow has grown and now takes up 50% of this precious and valuable space.

Please consider writing to your MP or Premier (or tweet @kathleen_Wynne)  about Phobe Rose. This is acute and aggressive cancer and time is not a luxury afforded. Or, if you can help please go to the online-auction on Facebook to lighten the massive financial burden of the family.

Jenny Doull-Hoffman writes eloquently and passionately – spare a moment to visit her blog: PhoebeRoseRocks and get to know your neighbour.

Eye Spy: The Segregated Laurier Bike Lane cycles into Sandy Hill + a suggestion to the Mayor

As per our tweet yesterday afternoon:

Say it w/ me: woohoo! . starts work to extend Laurier Bike lane from Elgin to Cumberland. Opens in August   RETWEETS10

It is with great excitement that we learned about the extension of the segregated Laurier Bike Lane in to Sandy Hill.

The extended lane will be segregated from Elgin St to the Queen Elizabeth Drive turn-off and from there it will be a painted lane across the bridge up to Cumberland St.

Mayor & us at Ride of Silence - advocating for safe cycling

Mayor & us at Ride of Silence – advocating for safe cycling

As a strong advocate of safe infrastructure supporting the use of urban “destination” cycling for all from 8-80 years we applaud advancement. Thank you City & Mayor Jim Watson for making this extension happen.

We urge the Mayor to consider extending this work, at least with painted line, – though segregated would be much better esp for those unsure or with young children – across King-Edward to Chapel St.  This further extension would lead nicely – via a right-hand turn – to the soon-to-be build Donald St -Strathcona Park bridge connecting us to Vanier & Overbrook. While a left hand turn off Laurier at Chapel would take cyclists smoothly through Lowertown to Beausoleil (Ottawa’s 1st Bike-only interesection) and up York across King Edward in to the Byward Market.  This network would truly unite all of Rideau-Vanier Ward 12.

It would be Ottawa’s first fully connected, full Ward cycle network – Let’s do it!

Eye Spy: Community Steps Out & Up for Positive Development

Beautiful Bate’s Hall in the back of All Saints Church at Chapel St and Laurier was alive with foot-stomping and fundraising over the weekend.

Food and dancersThe local community alarmed by a lack of vision from City officials and the dearth of action to preserve heritage architecture (some designated, some not) threw a party to raise money for conservation &  proactive, considerate development planning in the hood.

AuctionLocals are grateful for the tireless volunteer hours put in by spearheading dynamos Jane Gurr, Lynn Marchildon, Susan Young-Audet & Willow Scobie from ASH. SandyHillSeen was happy to be a part of this initiative and work with so many other local contributors including TAN Coffee, Remax, Andrex Holdings – who embrace sensitive development, Roz Matthews, Chez Lucien, C’est Bon Cooking, Rosemary Scagg, Hilltop Restaurant & bar who laid out an amazing spread and Ashton Brewing Company & Wellington Brewery who generously donated wonderful craft Beers.

Tellingly, on the same day as the party the illegal demolition of the Stewart-Dworkin building (under heritage study) on Rideau commenced. Please sign the petition for this building and ask your City to take action.

541RideauFinal note – Another grand old dame at 541 Rideau (formerly housing Culinary Conspiracy) is equally under threat. Lets talk it up and raise the rafters to protect our beautifully evocative & important history.
