Eye Spy: An Opportunity to Shape Sandy Hill

There are 11 more days to make your opinion count!

Sandy Hill is asking for input on ways to make positive changes in the neighbourhood. Via a short online survey (takes about 10 minutes) members of the community association Action Sandy Hill are looking to prioritise targets for changes – i.e. do we need better businesses first or to tackle litter problems.

No mystery to followers of Sandy Hill Seen that we are pushing the association to challenge members to live local for one short week – no cars for trips under 5KM – to encourage supporting businesses in the ‘hood and to see if through force of numbers we residents can change the profile of our streets!

walkWe are massive believers in the transformational power of walking and cycling one’s neighbourhood. Having lived car-less for 15 years until moving to Sandy Hill in 2012, it was shocking how many more neighbours we knew by sight if not by name in Notting Hill, Central London simply because we all walked and shopped locally. Sandy Hill we can make that change too!

Please be part of positive local change by taking this first step and completing the survey by July 21st.

Two Additional Dates for Triumphant Glengarry Glen Ross @ The Gladstone

An edited version of this review was published by Apt613. Heading in to David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross one wonders if, The Avalon Studio production will compare favourably to the excellent movie version with Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin & Al Pacino. Be assured, this is no poor cousin but a relentlessly vicious and vital theatrical experience of Mamet’s world of shady salesmen and dark deeds. GGR-held_overGlengarry Highlands & Glen Ross Farms – two undesirable developments in Florida – follows 24hours in the lives of a gang of thuggish real-estate agents competing on the company leader board in a race of diminishing markets with a punishingly masochistic office manager at the helm. Prepare for profanity and to witness every unethical trick in the book in David Pulitzer Prize winning masterpiece; an uncompromising ode to ethical vacuity and the desperation wrought by the art of the deal. Act1 delivers three quick-fire 2-hander scenes set in the cloying red Chinese restaurant across from the office. Shelley “the Machine” Levene (Tom Charlebois) is the aging company man facing off with the younger office-manager John Williamson (Leslie Cserepy). Levene accuses the boss of dishing out poor leads “You’re giving me fucking toilet paper.” Charlebois’ metamorphose from false bravado to sweaty, twitching desperation versus Cserepy’s taunting cocksure sadist imbued the theatre with a contagious and palpable tension. The introduction of Dave Moss (John Muggleton) and George Aaronow (Chris Ralph) alleviated the mood as Muggleton & Ralph take unethical lows to a new high with well-paced quick-talking dialogue prompting a spontaneous outburst of applause. Act 1 closes with Ricky Roma (Steve Martin) smooth talking a chance encounter with James Lingk (Dale MacEarchern) the puppet-strings fairly visible so silky is the spider web spun. Martin is slightly reminiscent of Al Pacino in this role which temporarily breaks the spell before he hits his stride. GlengarryBWCharacters established, the 2nd act concerns the investigation of the overnight office burglary of the “good leads”. The office, in complete disarray, sees Moss incandescent at the interviews being conducted by Detective Baylen (David Whiteley). John Muggleton fairly owns the stage in this brief explosive scene. Meanwhile client Lingk is swimming with sharks when faced with Roma & Levene as he tries to cancel his purchase of the day before.  And the stage is set for the final downward spiral as the production dives gleefully to its heart of darkness. Individually adept the cast work seamlessly as a team creating an evening that is sharp, ruthless and vigorous. Geoff Gruson’s direction is assured; he keeps the motley gang of character performances tight; maintaining a captivating tempo where individual performances shine without detracting from the ensemble. Glengarry Glen Ross is Mamet at his best; capturing a powerfully impotent and angry “world of men”. This revival, from dimmed lights to curtain call, fervently and competently embodies the salesmen’s maxim “Always be Closing”. Glengarry Glen Ross June 24- July 5th Now til July 12th Evenings 7:30PM, Matinees 2:30PM The Gladstone, 910 Gladstone Ave.

Eye Spy: Phoebe Rose gets the “Go”!

Never let it be said there is no reason or point to protests and speaking out. Over the last few weeks readers met our Overbrook neighbour 3 year old Phoebe Rose and learned of her many challenges.

Hearing of OHIP’s refusal to cover her latest treatment following a relapse – a treatment that will be available at Toronto’s Sick Kids in just over a month – her family, individuals, and neighbours spoke out and challenged this decision. Twitter followed and so did Ottawa Metro, CTV Morning and more.

This raising of voices has caused a re-examination of Phoebe’s case and today her Mother Jenny Doull shared the tremendous news that OHIP will cover her treatment in New York whilst Toronto sets up its own centre.

“Strength in numbers, strength in speaking out. @JennyDoull1 confirmed #OHIP will cover #PhoebeRose cancer treatment. Thank You all. “

Eye Spy: Council Challenger Marc Aubin Campaign Launch

Another week, another Campaign launch for the Rideau-Vanier Councillor seat in Ward12!

AubinLaunchTomorrow, Thursday July 3rd, Marc Aubin launches his campaign at local favourite Das Lokal at 190 Dalhousie St. 5-8PM

Wonderful to see so much advocacy and involvement in local politics – with the level of interest being shown there is no way but up for Ward12.

Eye Spy: Blooming Businesses in Ward 12 – Support Local!

Amongst the Canada Day wandering we spied the new John Fluevog store’s Grand Opening in the Byward Market.

JohnFleuvogThe celebrated Canadian shoe-designer has opened his flagship Ottawa shop in the heart of the Market at 61 William St. at George. Nice to see another cobbler take over the premises that formerly hosted Lou’s Boots – good continuity and another great shop open for business in the hood!

Straddling the border of Sandy Hill and Lowertown “Saffron Restaurant” at 426 Rideau St at Chapel has just been granted permission for a patio. This is thrilling news as the street fairly screams for more strolling leisurely foot traffic.

HeartlocalSaffron deserve local support – this restaurant gets great reviews on both Yelp and Google+ and the entrepreneurial owners have, alongside great food; invested in free Wifi, offer an breathtakingly inexpensive breakfast and never stop improving the interior.  Lets give back the love and with the advent of the patio, let’s hope this is a trend that many more local businesses will follow.

Wknd RoundUp: Canada D-Eh!

It’s the sort-of long weekend folks. I expect most people will take a 4day weekend and roll straight from Friday through Canada Day on Tuesday and well done on you!

HypnoticEvent of the weekend!! Saturday Jazz fest only has the mind-blowing horn blowing Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

First up: there are FOUR more days of Ottawa Fringe Festival  in the hood headquartered at Arts Court. The choice is expansive with many excellent shows selling out. I can’t recommend it more and am personally gutted to see the end in sight – but there is still time for more PHEW. I’ve had countless hours of entertainment this year and will miss the explosion of international and local talent as well as the free concerts and conviviality of the Waller Park beer tent when it wraps. If you do nothing else this weekend take a trip to the Fringe.

The Ottawa Jazz Festival continues their eclectic class act til 30June. Catch a show then take in the Late Night Jamming sessions at The Albion Rooms starting at 10:30PM.

Thursday evening: Sandy Hill Heritage Study from 6-8:30PM at the Sandy Hill Community Centre 250 Somerset St E.  Free entrance 5-8 at the National Gallery & the Byward Night Market is open for all your fresh produce shopping needs til 9PM.

Thursday night: Claude Munson host the open mic at Cafe Nostalgica. Free concert 9PM at Waller Park in the Ottawa Fringe Beer tent including Crissi Cochrane & Three Little Birds. Over at Ottawa’s only Jail/Bar Mugshots 75 Nicholas St  its all going off til 2AM withs Rehab Pizza Party w/ Cadence Weapon & Silkken Laumann.

Friday – still time for Fringe or check out the line up for great tunes alongside top brews with The Dirty Sheep, Sounds of Stories, Tales from the BackSeat and Novalatte all at the local Lunenburg Pub on Waller St.

Beautiful Saturday grab your bike and catch a brew and the sunset at 8LocksFlat on the Canal just off Colonel By side bike path. Best sunsets in Ottawa.

Saturday it’s the Arts Court favourite Art Battle Regional Ottawa Finals at the Ottawa Convention Centre (55 Colonel By Drive). Paint Brush at the ready, 20mins on the clock, you decide who wins! Starts at 7PM

Event of the weekend!! If you’ve never seen the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble then rush over to the Confederation Park for 10:30PM Saturday night to be properly enthralled. The 8-piece hailing from Chicago will not disappoint. It’s made up of the 8 sons of Jazz Trumpeter Phil Cochran and with only horns and a drum-set it will set your night on fire guaranteed. First time I saw these guys was an impromptu street gig on Portobello Market in 2009 – so word to the wise they frequently set up busker style (of course Ottawa City might fine them!) to get the vibe of the City.

Saturday night final chance to get your Fringe on and don’t miss the closing free night of concerts on the Downtown Rideau Stage in Waller Park featuring Ottawa favourite Silkken Laumann at 10PM.

For Sunday through Tuesday we recommend checking out OttawaStart for all the Canada Day festivities.

Eye Spy: Universal Challenges for Phoebe Rose

Last week Jonathan and Jenny Hoffman-Doull, following an agonising 18-day wait, were notified that the deemed “experimental” treatment required to treat Phoebe Rose’s aggressive form of childhood leukaemia would not be covered by OHIP.

To quote Phoebe’s tireless mom Jenny “What makes this even more frustrating is that treatment is supposed to open at SickKids in 1-2 months… and,  OHIP will cover it because it is at SickKids.

phoeberose slidesPhoebe Rose is the brave and beautiful 3.5year old living over the River and across the road from Ward 12. She has battled cancer since the age of 9 weeks putting her tiny body through much to advance the chances of those afflicted by this monster. Phoebe  deserves better from our Universal Health Care system. We must cease to compare ourselves to south of the border and hold up our own health-care to like-for-like universal systems in France, the UK, Netherlands and more. It is only through relevant  comparison that we will recognise real models for improvement and demand better health care.

Sandy Hill Seen hopes to reach out to it’s readership for any fundraising events as the family assesses it’s next steps which will likely include travel to St Jude’s in Tennessee for treatment. Together by caring for our friends, our neighbours and acquaintances we make our immediate world a better place.

Hard to believe a hip, trendy venue is celebrating its second decade but with visionary entrepreneurs France Desfosses & Sheila McLaine at the helm it’s easy to acknowledge the staying-power of the perennial popular coffee shop in the courtyard of the Byward Market.
