Prix Rideau Awards: Theatre Stars Shine Bright in Sandy Hill

Prix Rideau Awards Bate HallArticle also published on Apt613.ca
On Sunday evening a cavalcade of theatre luminaries gathered in Bates Hall, Sandy Hill to honour the brightest amongst their ranks.

warming up at the barThe Prix Rideau Awards founded in 2006 celebrates locally produced professional theatre and artists in both French and English. It is inspiring to see categories, including best male and female performers, best director, emerging artists, etc single out standout achievements in both official languages at one event.  This year’s nominations included 40 English theatre productions and 14 French language plays making for a packed hall of nominees, supporters, advocates and fans of local theatre and arts.

This year’s awards hosted by Tania Levy & Hugues Beaudoin-Dumouchel saw former host Annie Lefebvre literally beheaded in the show opener. Her corpse-less-head then overseeing proceedings from a table top.

The night was beautifully animated and the delivery, especially for a performing arts award show – these folks love the stage – was succinct and moved at a enjoyable pace with an engaged and bellicose audience.

Tina Goralski who won the 2013 “Derriere le Rideau/Behind the Curtain” French-language award for “A tu et A moi” delivered a particularly moving speech on the power of bilingual theatre – this from an Albertan Anglophone no less.  Brad Long taking “Outstanding Performance, Male” for “We Glow” had the crowd tittering with “the actor’s cliché” of no prepared speech.

The host’ were at one point stage-rushed for an impromptu “selfie” by a couple in the crowd. A bouquet toss was held for the “best dress” in the audience and Emily Pearlman made us well-up when, accepting “Best Director” for “Hroses”, she dedicated her win for a “play about love to the person that I’m so in love with”.

Eye Spy: Residents Come out for Pedestrian Memorial

Cllr Diane Holmes

Spring was in the air as the Ottawa community gathered at Rideau and Waller this afternoon to witness the memorial unveiling for Yvonne Hendrikx – killed by a double-trailer truck at this intersection in February. Trucks roared around the gathering and Councillor Diane Holmes who worked with WalkOttawa to organise the commemorative “Walker” at times struggled to be heard. It is good to see a marker indicating the significance of this incident. Hopefully it will remind City Hall of the urgency required to ensure this tragedy is not again repeated.

Eye Spy: The Human Scale Screening

Further afield than usual but worth the journey The Human Scale has its Ottawa premier tonight at the Mayfair Cinema on Bank St.

the human scaleThe Human Scale examines how public spaces are used and designed – a particularly relevant discussion in Ottawa at the moment with the City’s desire to increase core density. The documentary poses the question of how city’s would look and work if they were designed for humans rather than for traffic. Exercises are performed whereby spaces are reclaimed; cars which allow personal property to occupy huge swaths of public space are displaced to accommodate individuals. In particular Time Square re-imagined provokes the shockingly obvious realisation in locals that there is indeed no “Square” at this world famous landmark!

the_human_scaleDanish Architect and Professor Jan Gehl who has inspired city planning in Copenhagen for 40 years argues that cities must be built to encourage human interaction, inclusion and intimacy.

Let’s hope this international movement inspires Ottawa to recognise the importance of incorporating the required space for cyclists, pedestrians and infrastructures that encourage human interaction alongside traffic planning to create a more attractive, vibrant and liveable Capital city.

Shambling Things take over… Zombie Walk pics

Sunday saw masses of lurching, shuffling undead make their way to Macdonald Gardens Park in Sandy Hill before shambling off down Rideau Street on their annual Zombie Walk. Brains were the order of the day yet participants made generous donations to the Ottawa FoodBank – possibly to bulk up their prey.

Nice to see the no-longer-living out and about; some making it a family affair.
